VILLAGE LIFE: Ish Trail dedicated

Xt

Village Life issued the following on Oct. 23

It’s the date one of El Dorado County’s finest lost his life — one year ago — while serving and protecting his community.

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors officially proclaimed Oct. 23 Brian “Ish” Ishmael Day and on this date this year a portion of the El Dorado Trail was named in his honor.

All county flags were flown at half-staff Friday in remembrance of the deputy who made the ultimate sacrifice and community members as well as the deputy’s family and friends attended a special dedication ceremony at the trailhead on the corner of Forni Road and Ray Lawyer Drive in Placerville.

“He was always be remembered as a hero,” said Don Ishmael, Brian’s father. “We are grateful for the support and all the agencies that came together to make today happen. Our family is doing OK one year later because we have each other.”

Ishmael was fatally shot while responding to a reported marijuana theft in Somerset. He is survive by his wife, Katie and three children, Prudence, Zoey and Cash.

It was the county’s first deputy sheriff shooting fatality in 134 years; in 1864 an officer lost his life following a stagecoach holdup.

Ishmael was born in Placerville and graduated from Ponderosa High School. A four-year veteran of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, Ishmael previously served in the Placerville Police Department.
